Innovative Educators Shine at Pleasant Plains School
Kate Hayes, a 5th-grade teacher at Pleasant Plains Elementary School, is recognized for her innovative approach to hands-on, student-centered learning. Her classroom activities and projects promote academic skills and social-emotional growth. Hayes works closely with kindergarten teachers so that her students can take on leadership roles. For example, 5th graders assist with teaching coding with Ozobots and welcome kindergartners into shared activities, helping to build connections and confidence across grade levels.
Lori Volpe, a music teacher at the same school, has also been honored for creating an inclusive and welcoming music environment. Volpe led and produced a winter concert with the inaugural chorus, encouraging students to develop their musical skills and feel proud of their progress. She continues to pursue professional learning opportunities to bring fresh ideas into her classroom, ensuring that students have engaging, high-quality music experiences.
The Apex Foundation in Apex, North Carolina, announced these recognitions as part of Shoutout Tuesday. The APSF Shoutout celebration also acknowledged the support of FRESH Local Ice Cream, McDonald’s of Apex and Harnett County, Town of Apex Government, and the Wake County Public School System.
