Cornell Develops Robotability Score for NYC Streets

Researchers from Cornell University have developed a "robotability score" to evaluate how suitable New York City streets are for delivery robots. The score was created in response to challenges that delivery robots face on sidewalks, such as uneven surfaces and obstacles like bus shelters and pedestrians. Every street in New York City was rated using this system to determine its level of accessibility for robots.

According to Cornell researchers, the rating system is the first of its kind. The "robotability score" may assist urban planners and robotics companies in planning future robot deployments. The system can help ensure that these deployments do not interfere with existing sidewalk environments.

The research was conducted by Cornell Tech and is part of ongoing efforts to address urban challenges associated with autonomous delivery systems.
