Rowland House: Historic Gem of Aurora, NY Restored
Staff Report / FLXlocal.org
The Rowland House, located in Aurora, New York, was built in 1903 for Alonzo Morgan Zabriskie and his wife, Belle Loader. The house was commissioned by Alonzo’s mother, Louise Morgan Zabriskie, as a means to bring the couple back to Aurora due to her declining health.
Alonzo Zabriskie was born in Aurora in 1867 and was the eldest son of Nicholas Lansing Zabriskie and Louise Morgan Zabriskie. He grew up with his family, including his younger brother Robert, and his grandparents, E.B. and Charlotte Morgan, in the E.B. Morgan House.
During his childhood, Alonzo developed a passion for sports, particularly boating and fishing. Notably, he once assisted in rescuing passengers from a capsized catamaran on Cayuga Lake. As a young adult, Alonzo became part of the social scene during the final years of the Gilded Age, where he met Belle Loader, a well-known society figure from St. Louis. They were married in an elaborate green and white-themed wedding in 1902.
Rowland House was designed for entertaining and became a hub for Belle’s social events, including bridge tournaments, charity sales, and dinner parties. The house underwent restoration in 2014. More information about its history can be found on the Inns of Aurora website.
