Smokey Bear has a unique history that includes a journey into outer space. On May 15, 2012, Smokey traveled aboard the Soyuz spacecraft alongside NASA astronaut Joe Acaba to the International Space Station.

As part of the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge, participants can join the fun from September 16 to October 31, 2024. For more information, visit cadl.org/smokey. This event is organized by the Capital Area District Libraries in Lansing, Michigan.
