Navy Logistics Research Halted Mid-Exercise
Peter Frazier, the Eleanor and Howard Morgan Professor of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell Engineering, is leading a research team funded by the Office of Naval Research. His team is working on decision-support tools, optimization methods, and artificial intelligence approaches to enhance the U.S. Navy and Marines' ability to transport people and supplies quickly and efficiently during overseas conflicts or humanitarian disasters.
The project, which is funded at $1.2 million, recently received a stop-work order in April. This decision came as the team was in the midst of supporting a military exercise in Okinawa aimed at testing their optimization model. During the exercise, the Navy was providing feedback so that the tool could be refined.
The research blends technical optimization strategies with real-world applications, addressing the challenges of efficient logistics and transportation under critical conditions.
